Welcome to the Nebraska Sports Concussion Network and Testing Program.

This network and testing program was established to:

  • Improve athletic health care programs for competitive athletes by implementing a cost-effective sports-related concussion testing program.
  • Educate schools, coaches, athletes and parents about the nature of and inherent risks of sports concussions, and the current guidelines for managing sports concussions.
  • Educate the medical community on contemporary methods for managing concussions, and the progression for concussed athletes return to participation in a consistent and safe manner.  Physicians with training in neurocognitive test administration and test interpretation will be granted access to the ImPACT neurocognitive testing program for athletes baseline tested through the NSCN network.

The Nebraska Sports Concussion Network is comprised of various Nebraska medical facilities, physicians, allied health care professionals, high school athletic programs, and local medical communities with a common goal to improve the health and well-being of athletes.  High school athletic programs comprising the Sports Medicine Outreach Program are being given access to neurocognitive baseline testing at little or no cost to schools, athletes, or to parents.

Our main focus is to provide athletic programs with neurocognitive concussion baseline testing as a means for healthcare providers to utilize more consistent and objective criteria for determining when athletes can return to activity in a safer manner following a concussion.  Conducting educational training seminars in concussion management for medical clinicians, schools and coaches is another important component to the success of the testing program.

The neurocognitive baseline testing is being funded and implemented by the collaborative effort of Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center, while Nebraska Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine, PC, both of Lincoln, will coordinate and implement the testing program at schools within a sports medicine outreach program.  Dr. Daniel Tomes, MD, a board certified neurosurgeon in Lincoln with extensive expertise in treating athletes with head injuries will be the program's Medical Director.  Together, they have created Nebraska's first such program of this kind.

The Nebraska Sports Concussion Network and Testing Program is a Credentialed ImPACT™ Consultant Network (CIC) by ImPACT™ Applications, Inc, Pittsburg, PA.
